ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation technology, has embarked on the phased opening of its new $100 million campus in New Berlin, Wisconsin. This strategic expansion aims to boost US production capacity of industrial electric drives, aligning with the Build America Buy America Act (BABAA) commitments.
The initial phase of the campus launch was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by ABB employees, local elected officials, education leaders, and members of the media. This event underscored the company's commitment to fostering local economic growth and meeting the rising demand for electrification and automation solutions across various industries, including power, industrial, transport, and building sectors.
Brandon Spencer, President of ABB’s Motion Business Area, emphasized the significance of the US market as a critical growth driver for ABB. "Investment in this modern manufacturing facility gives ABB access to a highly qualified workforce, strengthens localized supply chains, and keeps us close to our customers," Spencer stated. His remarks highlight ABB’s strategic focus on enhancing its operational footprint in the United States while contributing to sustainable industrial practices.
In response to the growing need for emission reductions, ABB is capitalizing on its electrification and automation solutions to enable global customers to optimize and decarbonize their operations. This modern facility will bolster ABB's capability to deliver these solutions efficiently by harnessing clean technologies.
Tuomo Hoysniemi, President of ABB’s US Motion Business Area and Global Drive Products Division, elaborated on the cleaner technologies incorporated in the new campus. "We are also using technology to run our own factory cleaner with building design features such as solar power, geothermal heat pumps, modern HVAC systems, and advanced building controls," Hoysniemi explained. These innovations are crucial for meeting ABB’s own sustainability goals by 2030 and reflect the company’s dedication to eco-friendly operations.
The facility marks a significant leap in ABB’s production capabilities as it will house over 700 employees with plans to create an additional 100 jobs over the next three years. This increase in the workforce comes with the promise of a digital Customer Experience Center and a cutting-edge Innovation Lab, aimed at enhancing customer services across the United States.
To further optimize logistical operations, ABB is integrating a warehouse distribution center within the campus. This move is designed to cut down transportation costs and associated emissions, aligning with the company's overall sustainability strategy.
Kelly Kling, Site Leader and Head of Finance for US ABB Motion Business, emphasized the importance of collaboration among businesses, government, and educational institutions in preparing the workforce for modern manufacturing. Kling noted the pivotal role of STEM education in equipping individuals for the growing demand in fields such as electrical and mechanical engineering, contracting, and automation technology. "STEM education will better prepare the nation for the high demand of electrical and mechanical engineers, contractors, and automation technicians," Kling stressed. This initiative is not only critical for ABB’s success but also a vital component in building a robust American economy.
ABB's new campus in Wisconsin is not just an expansion of its physical footprint but a strategic move to foster sustainable manufacturing practices and enhance its service delivery within its largest market. The campus signifies ABB's unwavering commitment to sustainability, local economic development, and innovation in the field of electrification and automation.
