Denmark has earmarked 2.74 billion Danish crowns (approximately $400 million) to enhance its surveillance and intelligence capabilities in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions. This investment, part of a broader defense revamp and an effort to meet NATO objectives, will be primarily focused on acquiring long-range drones.
The initiative comes at a time of increased military and civilian activities in these strategic areas. The Danish Defense Ministry emphasized the importance of this investment in ensuring Denmark's capacity to better align with NATO's goals and enhance regional security.
As part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the country holds the responsibility for the defense and security of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, both located in critical positions in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The deployment of long-range drones is expected to significantly bolster Denmark's surveillance capabilities in these vast and challenging environments.
Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen highlighted the need for Denmark to assume greater responsibility in securing the region.
"The kingdom must in the future take greater responsibility for security in the entire region. This means that we need to use more muscle in the Arctic and the North Atlantic," Poulsen stated.
This allocation is part of Denmark's pledge last year to invest a total of 143 billion crowns in its defense sector over the next decade. The investment in drones marks the first substantial commitment under this pledge. Alongside the drone program, the agreement also includes the allocation of funds for air defense systems and the reactivation of a previously mothballed ammunition factory in northwestern Denmark.
The move reflects Denmark's strategic shift towards strengthening its defense posture in response to evolving global security dynamics.
