DoorDash, the American food delivery platform, has announced a new phase in its experimentation with drone delivery by partnering with Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, to offer drone delivery services in Christiansburg, VA. This initiative marks the first instance of such services being offered by DoorDash in the United States, following a successful pilot program in Australia.
Under this collaboration, select customers will have the option to receive their orders from Wendy’s—DoorDash’s inaugural restaurant partner for this venture—via drone. The move comes as part of a broader effort by DoorDash to diversify its delivery methods, incorporating sustainable and efficient alternatives to traditional vehicle delivery.
The announcement reflects a growing interest in drone delivery as a solution to last-mile logistics challenges, promising to enhance the speed and convenience of deliveries for consumers while potentially reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional delivery methods.
Harrison Shih, Senior Director of DoorDash Labs, emphasized the company's commitment to pioneering last-mile logistics solutions and expressed optimism about the role drone delivery could play in achieving a more efficient, sustainable delivery ecosystem.
The decision to launch in Christiansburg builds on the positive outcomes of DoorDash and Wing’s collaborative efforts in Australia, where the service has been operational for over a year. With over 350,000 deliveries made across three countries, Wing brings considerable experience to the partnership, aiming to replicate its success in the U.S. market.
Cosimo Leipold, Head of Partnerships at Wing, highlighted the milestone as a continuation of efforts to enhance the last-mile delivery ecosystem, underscoring the importance of fast, affordable, and safe delivery services.
Initially, the drone delivery option will be available for eligible orders placed from a specified Wendy’s location in Christiansburg, with deliveries expected to take 30 minutes or less. DoorDash plans to assess the pilot's performance with an eye towards expanding the service to additional U.S. cities later in the year.
This partnership emanates from DoorDash Labs, the company’s division dedicated to exploring robotics and automation solutions. It reflects DoorDash's broader strategy to leverage technology in meeting consumer demand while streamlining operational efficiencies.
