Drone Delivery Canada has announced new commercial agreements to expand its drone delivery operations at Edmonton International Airport (YEG), marking a significant advancement in the company's innovative logistics solutions. The contracts, worth $417,000, were facilitated by DDC's sales agent, Air Canada, and include collaborations with Edmonton International Airport, Apple Express Courier Ltd., BBE Expediting Ltd., and MFN Management Inc., a subsidiary of Montana First Nation.
The 12-month agreements involve expanding the existing drone delivery route from YEG, adding a new DroneSpot™ at a medical clinic in Leduc, Alberta. The clinic, owned by Montana First Nation, will receive cargo deliveries from YEG, enhancing healthcare services for both indigenous and non-indigenous communities. The project's first phase, which began in 2019, won the 2022 XCELLENCE Award for innovation and has completed over 2,400 flights covering more than 6,500km.
Operations will be remotely piloted from DDC's Vaughan, Ontario-based Operations Control Centre, adhering to Canadian regulations and Transport Canada approvals. The deployment of the site infrastructure will commence soon, with drone delivery services expected to begin later in 2024. DDC's Canary Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) will also be utilized once operational.
Steve Magirias, CEO of Drone Delivery Canada, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, emphasizing the opportunity to showcase the Canary RPA and explore new RPA delivery use cases in the YEG area. Myron Keehn, President & CEO of YEG, highlighted the project's alignment with YEG's net-zero by 2040 commitment and its role in advancing sustainable transportation and aviation solutions in the region.
The collaboration with Apple Express Courier Ltd. and BBE Expediting Ltd. reflects a joint effort to meet the evolving demands of healthcare and technology customers with cutting-edge delivery solutions. George Addai, General Manager of MFN Management Inc., also expressed excitement about the project's potential for corporate growth and innovation.
The expansion of drone delivery services at Edmonton International Airport signifies a major step forward in the integration of autonomous aerial logistics into mainstream operations, offering efficient, sustainable, and innovative solutions for critical infrastructure and healthcare delivery.
