Dufour Aerospace recently marked a significant milestone by conducting a series of customer demonstrations and test flights in Sweden, utilizing its AeroMini10 tilt-wing aircraft. Held at the Västervik airfield and supported by the Västervik Drone Science Park and strategic partner Savback Helicopters, these flights not only highlighted the capabilities of Dufour’s tilt-wing technology but also introduced the newly formed Dufour Operations Team in a real-world environment beyond the company's Swiss headquarters.
AeroMini10: A Scaled-Down Powerhouse for Tilt-Wing Technology
The AeroMini10, the smallest member of Dufour's tilt-wing family, served as the centerpiece of these demonstrations. While compact, the AeroMini10 is a critical platform for testing and validation, offering a fully comparable system to Dufour's larger Aero2, a six-meter wingspan flagship model. Over the course of 12 autonomous flights, Dufour's team showcased the aircraft's performance, focusing on its in-house flight control system and the broader capabilities of unmanned tilt-wing aircraft.
"These flights allow us to collect valuable operational insights in a controlled, yet unfamiliar, environment," noted a Dufour spokesperson. "This is essential for pushing the boundaries of what our aircraft can achieve outside the comfort zone of our home base in Switzerland."
The tests were conducted within visual line-of-sight (VLOS) of the drone pilots, although the AeroMini10 is equipped for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. This flexibility makes the platform ideal for proof-of-concept missions and training purposes, helping potential operators and pilots become familiar with the technology without the logistical challenges of managing a full-sized aircraft.
A Collaborative Success in Sweden
The demonstrations marked the first official deployment of Dufour’s new Operations Team, adding another layer of significance to the event. Supported by Savback Helicopters and the Västervik Drone Science Park, the flights in Sweden underline Dufour's growing international presence and its commitment to collaborating with local partners to advance unmanned aerial technology.
Savback Helicopters, a long-time partner of Dufour, expressed their enthusiasm for the successful test flights. “This was an exciting milestone not only for Dufour but for the future of unmanned aerial vehicles. We are thrilled to have played a part in bringing these demonstrations to Sweden and look forward to continuing our partnership with Dufour,” said a Savback representative.
The Future of Tilt-Wing Technology
Dufour’s tilt-wing design, which combines vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) with efficient forward flight, positions the company as a strong player in the evolving drone and unmanned aircraft landscape. The success of the AeroMini10 trials in Sweden provides a glimpse into the potential of its larger counterparts like the Aero2, particularly in areas such as cargo transport, and search and rescue missions.
As Dufour continues to push the boundaries of what tilt-wing drones can do, the recent demonstrations in Sweden serve as a crucial step in their mission to expand the application and accessibility of this technology across various sectors.
