Einride, a leading freight mobility company specializing in digital, electric, and autonomous technology, has announced a partnership with global food manufacturer Mars to introduce a fleet of electric heavy-duty trucks across Mars’ European network by 2030. This collaboration marks a significant step towards sustainable freight transportation, with the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
The partnership is set to revolutionize Mars' freight operations in Europe, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 20,000 metric tons annually by 2030. This reduction would account for approximately 10 percent of Mars Europe's road transport greenhouse gas emissions, marking a substantial stride in environmental sustainability.
Robert Falck, CEO and founder of Einride, emphasized the project's groundbreaking nature, stating,
“This sets a precedent for other players in the freight industry to follow, showcasing the mass potential of electrification at scale."
The initiative's first delivery occurred last week, involving two electric trucks and charging points powered by Einride’s operating system, Saga. These trucks transported goods from the Mars Petcare factory in Verden, Germany, to its distribution center in Minden, Germany. Annually, these trucks are expected to save up to 193,000 road miles (312,000 km) on this return route. To facilitate this transition, high-power charging stations have been installed at the German Petcare sites.
The partnership plans to expand across Europe, with routes in the UK and the Netherlands anticipated to start later in 2024. Additionally, an autonomous pilot is slated for implementation in 2025.
Barry Parkin, Chief Procurement and Sustainability Officer at Mars, highlighted the partnership's alignment with Mars' commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. “This partnership is our latest investment to achieve net zero by 2050, implementing the actions outlined in the Mars Net Zero Roadmap with a focus on improving and optimizing logistics, redesigning networks, transforming the type of transport we rely on, and embracing the electrification of our truck fleets."
Einride's freight capacity-as-a-service offering, powered by its operating system Einride Saga, includes deploying connected electric vehicles from leading OEMs, autonomous vehicles, and Einride Smartchargers. Saga provides data-driven insights and real-time updates, enabling shippers to optimize routes, reduce energy consumption, and accurately track emission reductions.
Since 2020, Einride has been a frontrunner in electric fleet operations in the US and Europe. Its clients, including Carlsberg, AB InBev, Maersk, Lidl, and GE Appliances, have experienced up to 95 percent decreases in CO2 emissions while maintaining cost competitiveness. This partnership with Mars Inc. is a significant leap forward for Einride, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable transportation solutions on a global scale.
