Archer Aviation, has made a significant addition to its leadership team with the appointment of Billy Nolen, former acting FAA Administrator, as the company's Chief Safety Officer. Nolen's extensive experience in aviation safety and flight operations, combined with his passion for advanced air mobility, will enhance Archer's ability to successfully bring urban air mobility to a commercial scale.
Adam Goldstein, Archer's founder and CEO, expressed his confidence in Nolen's leadership abilities and his support for the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft industry. During his tenure at the FAA, Nolen played a pivotal role in facilitating the safe integration of eVTOL aircraft into the national airspace. He has been a dedicated advocate for the eVTOL aircraft industry and recognizes its potential to transform global mobility. As Chief Safety Officer at Archer, Nolen will lead efforts to foster collaboration with industry stakeholders and ensure a smooth entry into service as the company prepares for commercialization in 2025.
Nolen expressed his honor in joining Archer, a pioneering company revolutionizing urban air mobility. He emphasized that the commercialization of eVTOL aircraft is no longer a question of "if" but rather "when." Nolen's decision to join Archer was driven by the company's focused approach to certification and the development of key enabling technologies for eVTOL aircraft. Before serving as the acting administrator at the FAA, Nolen led certification reform and safety management systems for airports. With over 33 years of experience in corporate safety, regulatory affairs, and flight operations, Nolen has held significant safety leadership positions at renowned airlines such as WestJet Airlines, Qantas Airways, Airlines for America, and American Airlines. He began his career as a pilot for American Airlines and served in the U.S. Army as an airplane and helicopter pilot and safety officer.
Nolen's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He has also obtained specialized aviation safety management certificates from the University of Southern California, the United States Army Safety Center, and the United States Navy Postgraduate School. Additionally, Nolen is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
