MightyFly, an emergent player in the autonomous air cargo industry, recently showcased its latest development, the Cento, a cutting-edge hybrid eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft. This third-generation model, designed to autonomously transport up to one hundred pounds of cargo for six hundred miles, marks a significant advancement in unmanned aerial logistics.
The 2024 Cento model, revealed at MightyFly's headquarters, boasts several innovative features that enhance its operational efficiency and adaptability. Key characteristics include a tandem wing design for improved lift control, structural conductors for enhanced reliability and weight reduction, a composite structure for increased payload capacity, and a modular design for simplified maintenance. Additionally, the aircraft utilizes its canard as landing gear to minimize drag and optimize efficiency.
One of the Cento's standout features is the Autonomous Load Mastering System (ALMS), which automates the processes of opening and closing the cargo bay door, handling packages, and computing weight and balance. This system, developed in collaboration with Agility Prime and Air Mobility Command, is designed to meet the U.S. Air Force’s autonomous aerial logistics needs.
The aircraft's cargo bay has been significantly enlarged compared to its predecessor, based on extensive market research to optimize package capacity for its 100-pound payload capability. This expansion allows for the transport of larger items, including medical supplies like organ transplant coolers and blood bags. The Cento's versatility makes it a valuable asset for various industries, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, retail, automotive, and oil and gas, as well as for humanitarian and disaster relief efforts.
Manal Habib, co-founder and CEO of MightyFly, expressed excitement at the unveiling:
“The 2024 Cento combines innovation with efficiency in design, maintenance, and operation. This aircraft is poised to transform the expedited logistics market and revolutionize industries across the board.”
Investor Tim Draper, Founding Partner of Draper Associates, also praised the Cento's potential during the event: “The 2024 Cento is a testament to MightyFly’s talent and creativity. This technology will address urgent logistics needs and has the potential to save lives globally.”
MightyFly concluded production of the Cento in early January 2024 and will initiate aircraft qualification tests in February. The company plans to debut public autonomous cargo delivery flights in Michigan in fall 2024, showcasing point-to-point delivery capabilities. Further demonstrations of its autonomous package handling are scheduled with the U.S. Air Force in early 2025, along with additional Proof of Concept programs.
