OhioHealth has announced a collaboration with Zipline, the world's largest autonomous delivery service. The partnership aims to utilize Zipline's fully electric drone delivery within OhioHealth's network, serving patients and healthcare providers in the greater Columbus area.
An Emerging Approach to Healthcare Logistics
Using Zipline's next-generation Platform 2, OhioHealth plans to employ electric drones to efficiently deliver prescriptions directly to patients' homes and transport lab samples and medical supplies between healthcare facilities. The system is expected to complete 10-mile deliveries in just about 10 minutes, with the potential to reach nearly 2 million people by 2025.
This new initiative offers several benefits, such as reduced carbon emissions, faster diagnostic turnaround times, and more convenient home prescription delivery.
A Different Take on Traditional Delivery Methods
OhioHealth's Vice President of Pharmacy Services, Charles McCluskey III, spoke favorably of the Zipline partnership. He highlighted that the drone delivery method offers a quicker, more cost-effective, and environmentally responsible alternative to conventional delivery means.
Zipline's U.S. Healthcare Practice Head, Hillary Brendzel, also emphasized the efficiency of their system. She described it as quiet and unobtrusive and expressed enthusiasm about working with OhioHealth to provide new solutions to the communities they serve.
Efficiency Meets Sustainability
Zipline's drones, referred to as Zips, will operate at more than 300 feet above the ground, rendering them nearly inaudible. Their fully autonomous delivery droids will enable precise deliveries, gently placing packages at specific locations.
Zipline's platform is notable for its sustainability, with potential reductions in emissions of up to 97%. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have also associated it with an 88% reduction in maternal deaths from postpartum hemorrhage.
Broadening Partnerships
OhioHealth's collaboration aligns with its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance healthcare access. Zipline has already partnered with governments, companies, and healthcare institutions worldwide.
OhioHealth joins other organizations using Zipline's Platform 2 system, such as Michigan Medicine, MultiCare Health Systems, Intermountain Health, GNC, and more.
