Uber Eats Japan announced the introduction of an autonomous robot food delivery service in Tokyo's Nihonbashi district starting Wednesday, aiming to tackle the challenge of delivery personnel shortages. This initiative marks Japan as the second country, following the United States, to implement the Uber Eats robot delivery service.
Initially, the service will deploy one delivery robot capable of completing deliveries in approximately 30 minutes. The robot, created by a U.S. company, is designed to navigate sidewalks at speeds up to 5.4 kilometers per hour and comes equipped with a camera for navigation. While the robot will autonomously traverse sidewalks, it will be remotely controlled when crossing streets.
To receive their orders, customers will need to meet the robot outside their location. However, Mitsubishi Electric, responsible for the robot's operation, stated that the technology exists for the robot to enter buildings and use elevators, expanding potential future capabilities of the service.
