UrbanV, an Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) company, has announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to establish an urban transport network for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles. This collaboration sets the stage for an innovative revolution in sustainable urban transportation, with the first flights expected to take off in Rome by 2025.
In collaboration with AWS Professional Services (ProServ), UrbanV is set to build and manage its own networks of vertiports. These hubs will be utilized by eVTOLs to transport passengers within city centers, presenting a futuristic alternative to traditional city commutes. With AWS's proven track record as the leading cloud provider for airlines and airports worldwide, UrbanV plans to develop an scalable operating model for these vertiports that can be expanded globally in the coming years.
UrbanV is set to make its debut in Rome with an ambitious goal to launch its eVTOL service from Rome Fiumicino Airport to central Rome by the end of 2024. This service is being timed to coincide with the city's Jubilee in 2025. Subsequently, from 2026, Rome’s network will expand to incorporate 10 vertiports, allowing for rapid, traffic-free travel between popular transit hubs and tourist destinations.
In addition, UrbanV aims to establish vertiport networks in Venice, Bologna, and the French Riviera. This initiative will offer travellers faster and greener alternatives to crowded city streets and conventional modes of transport. Over the next five years, the company plans to invest hundreds of millions of euros to extend its model on both European and global scales.
AWS will be instrumental in developing the operating model for UrbanV vertiports. By harnessing AWS's cloud technology, UrbanV plans to streamline the passenger experience by automating check-in operations and security checks. This digital transformation will not only simplify processes but also reduce the physical footprint of these vertiports, allowing for better integration into urban spaces. Moreover, passengers will enjoy real-time personalized updates and flexible travel plans.
Carlo Tursi, CEO of UrbanV, stated, "Our vision for electric urban air travel focuses on reinventing the flying experience. Within AWS, we recognized the ideal cloud partner to turn this vision into a reality. Their unrivalled experience in the airline industry, combined with a thirst for innovation, makes them the perfect partner to create new possibilities. Together, we will develop a revolutionary urban travel experience, not only in terms of the vehicles involved but also in terms of the passenger experience.”
