Carbonix has announced that its Volanti drone has obtained a nationwide waiver for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations across the United States. This waiver allows the Volanti, a fully electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone, to substantially expand its mission capabilities in uncontrolled airspace, marking a major milestone for the UAV industry.
The Volanti is celebrated for its versatility, precision, and extended flight capabilities, making it suited for conducting rapid aerial surveys across vast and challenging terrains. The waiver, secured through Carbonix’s collaboration with U.S. partner ArgenTech Solutions, eliminates many of the limitations typically associated with traditional line-of-sight operations. This development is poised to significantly enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of UAV missions.
According to Carbonix, the BVLOS waiver is a critical step in enabling scalable and long-range data collection missions. It allows the integration of Carbonix’s advanced UAV platforms with ArgenTech’s expertise in UAV operations and regulatory compliance, particularly in vital industries such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, and energy infrastructure.
ArgenTech's history of supporting the Volanti includes pivotal operations earlier this year in partnership with Quebec-based Exo Drone during Canada’s intense bushfire season. The Volanti proved instrumental in these missions by effectively identifying wildfires initiated by lightning strikes—a crucial capability in mitigating potential threats. This landmark operation marked the Volanti as the first Australian fixed-wing VTOL drone to carry out fully automated BVLOS missions for commercial purposes.
Philip van der Burg, CEO of Carbonix, emphasized the significance of this waiver, highlighting that it allows the Volanti to cater to a broader spectrum of applications with enhanced flexibility and cost-effectiveness. “Our drones are designed for long-range, high-endurance missions, and this approval validates their role as leaders in the UAV space,” van der Burg stated. He further expressed his enthusiasm about bringing their innovative drone technology to a wider market through their U.S. operations with ArgenTech Solutions.
ArgenTech Solutions CEO Brian Veroneau underscored the waiver’s impact on driving the adoption of UAVs across various industries. “The waiver positions Carbonix and the Volanti as frontrunners in the rapidly evolving UAV industry, setting new benchmarks for safety, scalability, and innovation,” Veroneau commented. He noted that the capability to operate on a new scale provides clients with more flexible, powerful, and sustainable UAV solutions, reinforcing the strategic partnership with Carbonix.
This advancement not only boosts the operational scope of the Volanti but also positions it as a competitive UAV solution.
