Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous vehicle unit, announced that it has closed an oversubscribed $5.6 billion investment round, led by Alphabet and with ongoing participation from Andreessen Horowitz, Fidelity, Perry Creek, Silver Lake, Tiger Global, and T. Rowe Price. This latest funding surge fuels Waymo's plans to scale its Waymo One ride-hailing service and advance its AI-powered Waymo Driver platform, positioning the company to solidify its position in the autonomous vehicle industry.
With the fresh capital, Waymo intends to expand its Waymo One ride-hailing service in existing markets such as San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, while preparing to launch in Austin and Atlanta through an expanded partnership with Uber. Beyond ride-hailing, the funding will support Waymo’s development of its autonomous driving system, the Waymo Driver, which is designed for adaptability across various commercial applications.
"Customers love Waymo. The company has built the safest and best product in the autonomous vehicle ecosystem," said Chase Coleman, Founder of Tiger Global. "Waymo’s expertise in fostering rider loyalty, forging key partnerships, and collaborating with auto industry leaders has established them as the market’s enduring leader."
Silver Lake Co-CEO Egon Durban added, “Waymo’s leadership in autonomous driving builds trust by actualizing AI’s potential in real-world transportation. Their relentless focus on safety and scale aligns them perfectly with the demands of modern transportation."
Growing Market Presence and Scaling Operations
2024 has been a pivotal year for Waymo's growth. The company has expanded its Waymo One service areas in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, including curbside service to Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport. In Austin and Atlanta, Waymo will begin offering ride-hailing through Uber in 2025, opening new avenues to introduce riders to fully autonomous experiences. Waymo has also begun fully autonomous freeway operations in Phoenix and San Francisco, allowing riders to experience seamless journeys in more complex driving environments.
These expanded operations have translated into substantial rider adoption. Waymo now delivers over 100,000 paid weekly trips, a remarkable tenfold increase over the past year. As more riders experience Waymo One, the company remains focused on extending the safety and mobility benefits of the Waymo Driver to new regions while continuously refining its technology.
Unveiling the 6th-Generation Waymo Driver
To support its growing ambitions, Waymo has introduced its 6th-generation Waymo Driver. This latest iteration is engineered for optimized costs and advanced capabilities, making it adaptable to increasingly complex driving environments. The Waymo Driver is currently being tested in diverse locales, including recent road trips to cities like Buffalo, New York, and Washington, D.C., where the platform’s flexibility and safety record will be further evaluated.
“While AI is only just beginning to capture the public imagination, Waymo has been working to bring its possibilities to the world of physical transportation for years,” Durban noted. “Waymo’s Driver is a testament to their vision of making AI a practical and trusted asset on the road.”
A Commitment to Safety and Transparency
At the heart of Waymo’s strategy is its commitment to transparency and safety. The company recently launched a safety impact hub, providing insights into how the Waymo Driver enhances road safety. This complements regular publications detailing the Waymo Driver’s safety record, underscoring its positive impact on urban road safety and strengthening public trust in autonomous driving technology.
As Waymo scales its operations, the company's dedication to rider trust and road safety remains paramount. The substantial backing from Alphabet and other investors not only fuels Waymo's expansion but also reinforces its position as a leader in autonomous driving innovation, setting the stage for continued growth in a rapidly evolving industry.
