Zipline, recognized as the world’s largest autonomous delivery system, today celebrated a historic achievement, completing one million commercial drone deliveries. This landmark event underscores the rapid growth and potential of autonomous delivery technology.
In a significant operational milestone, Zipline’s drones have now logged over 70 million miles across four continents, delivering a diverse range of over 10 million products. Notably, 70% of these deliveries occurred in the past two years, demonstrating accelerated adoption and expansion of services, which include collaborations with global retail leaders like Walmart, and initiatives in food delivery in Japan and healthcare in Africa.
The company’s growth is further evidenced by the announcement of its next-generation Platform 2 (P2) system, which will soon facilitate deliveries from notable partners such as Panera Bread, Memorial Hermann Health System, and Jet’s Pizza in key U.S. metro areas including Seattle, Houston, and Detroit.
Ryan Oksenhorn, Co-Founder and Head of Software at Zipline, shared his vision for the future, stating, "Over the past decade, we’ve worked hard to build a system that scaled to 1 million paid customer deliveries. In the near future, I believe that 1 million deliveries will be unremarkable as we reach a million deliveries in a year, in a month, in a day. Ten years from now, I think clean, reliable autonomous delivery of goods and services will be available to everyone.”
This expansion aligns with recent regulatory approvals for Zipline’s innovative “beyond visual line of sight” operations in the U.S., setting the stage for an even broader deployment of its services. The company plans to implement its P2 system across 10 states, potentially serving over 30 million people in the coming years.
Innovative collaborations underscore Zipline's growth trajectory. For instance, Greg Flynn, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Flynn Group, emphasized the benefits of drone deliveries for Panera Bread customers in Seattle, enhancing reliability and reducing wait times. Similarly, Alec King, EVP and CFO of Memorial Hermann Health System, highlighted the role of Zipline in improving patient access to essential medical supplies and prescriptions.
John Jetts, CEO of Jet’s Pizza, also commented on the partnership, noting the advantages of drone delivery in expanding their service area and ensuring the freshness of their pizzas, regardless of external conditions like traffic or weather.
As the demand for quick and reliable delivery options continues to rise, especially in the food delivery sector, Zipline’s innovations are setting new standards in the logistics and delivery industry. The company’s commitment to zero-emission operations has already resulted in significant environmental benefits, saving over 750,000 gallons of gas that would have been used for traditional delivery methods.
