This expansion allows eligible customers to receive select items weighing five pounds or less via drone, with deliveries completed in under an hour. The Tolleson facility, a hybrid fulfillment center and delivery station, enables efficient processing and dispatch of orders.
The service utilizes Amazon's new MK30 drone, designed for suburban and urban deliveries. The MK30 is quieter than previous models, travels twice as far, and can operate in light rain. It has received FAA approval for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, thanks to its onboard detect-and-avoid system.
Amazon offers over 50,000 products for drone delivery, including household items and tech supplies. A small service fee applies to drone deliveries. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego highlighted the environmental benefits, stating, "The shift toward zero-emission package delivery will help us reduce local pollution and further cement our city as a hotbed for the innovative technology of tomorrow."
Since its first drone delivery service in 2022, Amazon has expanded to areas like College Station, Texas, where it also began delivering prescription medications. The company plans to continue refining and expanding Prime Air operations based on customer feedback.
