In a significant advancement for urban drone delivery systems, Matternet, a leading developer in drone delivery platforms, has received authorization from the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA), Germany’s Federal Aviation Office, to operate its Matternet M2 drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) in Berlin. This development paves the way for the city’s first BVLOS drone delivery network, set to revolutionize healthcare logistics.
Labor Berlin, Europe’s largest hospital laboratory, will be the main beneficiary of this innovative network. Providing diagnostic services to 30 hospitals, including Charité and Vivantes, Labor Berlin manages over 6 million lab samples annually. The new drone delivery system aims to facilitate ultra-fast transportation of critical samples between Labor Berlin’s central lab and its network of hospitals across the densely populated city.
Scheduled to begin operations early next year, this initiative is expected to significantly enhance healthcare delivery for millions of patients annually. “This is a game-changer for healthcare systems, offering a swift, dependable, and cost-efficient transportation solution for lab samples and pharmacy items,” said Andreas Raptopoulos, Founder and CEO of Matternet.
The network primarily targets emergency diagnostics, promising not only increased operational efficiency but also a reduction in carbon emissions. Currently, car travel within Berlin for lab sample deliveries amounts to nearly 250,000 miles per day. The introduction of drone deliveries is expected to diminish this significantly, aligning with broader environmental goals.
Nina Beikert, CEO of Labor Berlin, emphasizes the project's alignment with their commitment to innovation and sustainability. “Drone delivery will not only hasten emergency testing but will also streamline supply chains and lower greenhouse gas emissions,” she remarked.
Klaus Tenning, Head of Studies and Collaborations at Labor Berlin, expressed enthusiasm for the project: “We’re eager to see our vision for a fully operational drone delivery network come to fruition, enhancing patient care across our service network.”
Matternet’s progress in Germany builds on its existing successes in Switzerland and the United States, where it has been delivering lab samples via drones since 2017 and 2019, respectively. The company's achievements include U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Type Certification and Production Certification, along with operational approvals from the FAA, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA), and now the German LBA.
