Amazon Prime Air is set to expand its drone delivery in the U.S. following the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) approval for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone operations. This milestone allows Prime Air to broaden its drone delivery services and scale operations to more locations, starting with College Station, Texas.
BVLOS refers to drone flights conducted beyond the pilot’s direct line of sight, relying on instruments or technology for monitoring and control. This capability is crucial for scaling complex drone operations such as package delivery. The FAA’s approval signifies confidence in Prime Air’s safety measures and technological advancements.
To secure this approval, Amazon developed a comprehensive BVLOS strategy featuring advanced onboard detect-and-avoid technology. Years of development, rigorous testing, and successful flight demonstrations in various real-world scenarios convinced the FAA of the system’s reliability. These demonstrations included interactions with real aircraft and a hot air balloon, showcasing the drone’s ability to navigate safely.
Prime Air provided detailed engineering documentation, operational protocols, and extensive test data to the FAA. Following a thorough review and observation of the technology in action, the FAA granted the BVLOS approval, enabling Prime Air to extend its delivery services in College Station.
With this new authorization, more Amazon customers in College Station will have access to drone deliveries, choosing from thousands of items including household essentials and beauty products. Later this year, drone deliveries will integrate into Amazon’s delivery network, launching from facilities adjacent to Same-Day Delivery sites. This integration promises faster delivery times and a broader selection of items for customers.
Safety remains a top priority for Prime Air. The company received an Air Carrier Certificate from the FAA in 2020, permitting drone deliveries of small packages. This new BVLOS approval reinforces Amazon’s commitment to safe and scalable drone operations.
Prime Air’s vision is to deliver packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using highly autonomous drones. With the goal of delivering 500 million packages per year by the end of the decade, Prime Air has continuously innovated to develop safe and effective drone technology. The recent FAA approval marks a significant step towards achieving this ambitious goal.
As operations scale in College Station with the current MK-27 drone, Amazon is poised to reach more densely populated areas, setting the stage for the next chapter in drone delivery logistics.
