This collaboration marks a significant stride towards enhancing patient access to healthcare by leveraging Zipline’s electric, autonomous drones for the direct delivery of prescriptions to patients' homes and the swift transportation of lab samples and medical products between WellSpan facilities.
The initiative positions WellSpan as the pioneering health system in Pennsylvania to deploy such advanced delivery technology on a considerable scale, aiming to significantly reduce delivery times compared to traditional ground transportation methods. Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., President and CEO of WellSpan Health, emphasized the project's potential to simplify patient access to healthcare services, making the process as easy as pressing a button. This move is expected to make healthcare delivery more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable across South Central Pennsylvania.
Zipline’s Platform 2 home delivery system, renowned for its speed, accuracy, and unobtrusive operation, will power the service. The system employs autonomous drones, known as Zips, which execute deliveries with minimal disturbance, dropping packages from a safe height via a tethered autonomous delivery droid. This technology ensures precise drop-offs at specified locations, such as a patient's front steps or patio table, with real-time delivery tracking for added convenience.
Keller Rinaudo Cliffton, Co-Founder and CEO of Zipline, highlighted the company's track record of enhancing healthcare access through drone technology and expressed enthusiasm for extending these benefits to WellSpan's patients. Zipline’s operation, characterized by its minimal carbon footprint, aligns with WellSpan’s sustainability goals, including a commitment to halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
